The Chain Bridge

The Chain Bridge is the oldest bridge in Budapest and the most well known bridge over the Danube. It is officially known as Széchenyi Bridge in honour of a major supporter of its construction, István Széchenyi.
The difficulty of crossing the Danube between stations was the main reason for building the bridge. Until its construction, the Danube could be crossed only by boat or, during cold winters when people had to walk on its frozen waters.
The Chain Bridge is the most representative symbol of Budapest. Its picture is imperative in all tourist presentations about Hungary and has been used on stamps, banknotes and Hungarian coins.
