About New York City

Times Square in New York

New York State's biggest gem is New York City (NYC) located at the mouth of the Hudson River in the downstate metropolitan centre. Literally brimming with legendary attractions left, right and centre which are regular settings in top movies, books and TV programmes, the "city that never sleeps" will have any visitor feeling like a child in a giant kid store. Not only is NYC the most visited city on the North American continent, it is an economic superpower with a worldwide influence that ranges from commerce to media, art, dance, fashion, entertainment, finance and technology.

Comprised of five very distinct boroughs; The Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Stated Island, New York City is the nation's most densely populated area. Since the 17th century up until the 20th century, NYC played the role as a major gateway for millions of immigrants into the country which has resulted in an immensely multicultural society unmatched in any other part of the world. You'll find a melting pot of foreigners and separate communities originating from the Dominican Republic, China, Jamaica, Mexico, India, Ecuador, Italy, Russia, Colombia, Haiti and El Savador for example, coexisting in this bubbling city. Such diversity has led to the creation of an open-minded society whereby anything goes so visitors should expect to find anything during their sightseeing of the city.

Notorious for its mega-skyscrapers, yellow taxis, noisy streets and even louder New Yorkers with their quirky New York dialect, NYC is every bit the must-visit. From Time Square's Broadway to Wall Street's Stock Markets, NYC is the most diverse place you can possibly travel to in the United States. It exudes American democracy, strength, unity and pride which are transmitted through renowned symbols such as the iconic Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building and the most recent One World Trade Center which is a tremendous representation of America's ability to get back up on its feet no matter what. Everywhere you turn there is something bigger and better to feast your eyes upon from amazing vertical to horizontal visions like the Chrysler building to Brooklyn Bridge. One of the best times to take in the beauty of New York City is during the night, preferably at sunset when the skyline comes alive with a rainbow of colours and an array of lit up skyscrapers. An indescribable experience!

New York City has for decades been considered the cultural centre of the world and was the birthplace of significant historical movements in literature and painting but mostly in the area of music with hip hop, punk, freestyle and Jazz. There are a number of interesting cultural destinations you should head to whilst in NYC such as Times Square's Theater District, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York city Opera and Carnegie Hall. Another important cultural aspect in the city is sports. Boasting some of the most magnificent sport stadiums across the globe such as Yankee Stadium, Madison Square Garden, MetLife Stadium and being the headquarters of Major League Baseball, the National Basketball Association, the National Football League and the National Hockey League, NYC is the place to be in for top American sporting events.

Despite common thinking, however, New York City is not all cement and busy streets. Within its confinements are several beautiful parks and preserves containing acres of gardens, lakes, meadows and woodlands. Top visited attractions include the gorgeously green Central Park of Manhattan, Prospect Park, Clay Pit Ponds State Park Preserve, Riverbank State Park, Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, Forest Park and Washington Square Park.
