Waitomo Glowworm Caves

The Waitomo Glowworm Caves are a group of caves located in Waitomo, northern New Zealand. The hidden site attracts numerous tourists due to its large population of glow worms (Arachnocampa luminosa) - a kind of fly whose larvae occupy the ceiling of the cave and drop a strand of silk wrapped with mucus and poison that has bioluminescence (ability to produce light) to attract prey. This type of specie is found exclusively in New Zealand and is around the size of an average mosquito.
