The most characteristic feature of Venice are the beautiful canals that run through all corners of the city as if they were streets. The largest and most important of all is the Grand Canal which with its large reverse-S shape crosses the city dividing it into two parts. It is 3800 m long, 30–90 m wide, with an average depth of five metres.
