Charming Besançon
Few will have heard of this eastern French gem as it nothing as touristy as other cities of France we all know and love, but Besançon does have several fine qualities of its own that should not be underestimated. Besançon, the capital city of Franche-Comté, is a refreshingly charming region and great getaway from the hussle and bussle of industrialised cities lined with promenades along river banks and well-kept walk-ways within the city itself. Popular amongst lovers of art and history Besançol has a variety of treats in store from roman remains to grand cathedrals, art centres, monuments and museums to visit. Once proclaimed France's green city, Besançon offers beautiful parks and gardens containing thousands of species; floral collections including carnivorous plants, medicinal plants, orchids, roses; and vibrant fruit trees. Besançon's historic town, lying within a loop of the river Doubs, is one of France's best preserved historic centres and is overlooked by the Vauban's 17th century masterpiece, the Besaçon Citadel - a fortification and UNESCO World Heritage Site offering first-class views over the old town and encircling verdant hills as witnessed in this video.
