The island of Mykonos which has an area of 86 km² and 9400 inhabitants is located in the Aegean Sea in the north central area of the Cyclades archipelago. The island is one of the most important tourist destinations of the Cyclades. Tourism is the main economic activity of the islanders. Mykonos is famous for its lively nightlife and its beautiful beaches. Windmills, dating back to the sixteenth century, are the most recognized symbols of the island.
