Gorey Castle at low tide
Mont Orgueil is a castle that dominates the port of Gorey and certainly offers the best image for postcards of Jersey. It is also called Gorey Castle by English-speakers, and lé Vièr Châté (the Old Castle) by Jèrriais-speakers. Gorey Castle was built on the East coast between the 13th and 14th centuries. For years it has been the subject of dispute between the French and British. During the French Revolution, the nobles had set here their winter shelters. From the top of the tower it is possible to see the French coast if the weather permits.
